Fire Education

"Never has Man Been Closer to God but When He is Giving Safety to His Fellow Man."

The most important thing we do as "Fire Marshal's" and "Fire Inspectors" is Fire Safety Education. The purpose of this page is to help you find resources to do that job. If you know of a resource not listed here please e-mail the web master at the bottom of this page.

An impressive list of fire prevention resources is available at Suppliers

Trish Van Pilsum and her crew from WCCO Channel 4 Dimension and later Fox produced eight prime time news programs for an in-depth look at fire safety issues facing the public.

One program shows the importance of practicing a family fire escape plan. With multiple cameras and a machine to generate non-toxic smoke they filmed a late night fire drill in the homes of three separate families. The children were told about the drill but they didn’t know when it was going to happen. While they were asleep a smoke detector sounded and smoke appeared in the hallway. The reaction of all the children was dangerous. Had it been a real fire some of them would likely have perished. A second drill was held after some instruction with the local Fire Marshal. They all survived. Watching the emotional reaction of the parents is enough to convince anyone they should practice this drill with their own family.

A second program is on the effectiveness of residential fire sprinkler systems. A home selected for demolition by the Hutchinson Fire Department is used for live fire demonstrations. A fire sprinkler system is installed in the living room where a waste basket fire is started. Ms. Van Pilsum and her crew stayed inside the home while the fire grew. The fire sprinkler activated and extinguished the fire. Dry furniture was brought in and a second fire was started, without the assistance of fire sprinklers. Trish and a camera operator were given a short course on fire fighter turn-out gear and breathing apparatus. As the fire was allowed to grow it became apparent anyone inside without protection would be in serious trouble. Trish focused on the differences between the two fires and value of fire sprinklers. This piece includes interviews with local fire fighters who were involved in a recent fatal fire. Three children had perished in an un-sprinklered Hutchinson home. This program gives a very powerful message.

Both of these programs aired on the 10:00 news. To expand on their impact, WCCO has allowed us to reproduce them in both video and digital formats. They are very professional, an asset to any fire prevention education library. They are extremely valuable in educating people how they can be safer in their homes, the place where most fire deaths occur. It is readily apparent to those of us in fire safety education that the WCCO crew did a lot of research in producing these programs. It received high praise from one local Fire Marshal who stated, “They didn’t say anything wrong.”
